Jeff Sluman notched his second Champions Tour victory after closing with a 5-under-par 67 to win the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. The 50-year-old Sluman had a 14-under 202 total in the 54-hole event and earned $315,000.

Responding to wide-spread criticism, LPGA commissioner Carolyn Bivens, retracted the policy requiring Tour players to effectively communicate in English.
As more and more foreign players have come to dominate the LPGA, Tour officials warned members this week that they must become conversant in English by 2009 or face suspension. The tour feels that English-speaking skills could be more appealing to sponsors.
The world's best 20 women golfers will square off on the Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Golf Links in California for the first time October 1-5 in the Samsung World Championship. Often called the LPGA Tour's "fifth major," the tournament has been played on five continents during its 27-year existence. Half Moon Bay Golf Links is the 15th course to host the event, which began in 1980 at The Country Club in suburban Cleveland, Ohio.

After fearing he was jeopardizing his chances of being selected by Nick Faldo as one of two captain's picks for the European Ryder Cup team, Ian Poulter can now rest easy. Poulter along with fellow Englishman Paul Casey were selected yesterday by Faldo at a news conference held after the Johnny Walker Championship in Gleneagles, Scotland.
