The goal at Old Marsh Country Club in Wells, Me., was ambitious: to build a brand new, 18-hole golf course in a single year. It turned out to be cautious. Old Marsh broke ground on New Year's Day 2007; the last hole was seeded October 9, 2007, and the club is scheduled to hold its grand opening July 4th of this year.
Harris Golf, the Maine-based course developer, contractor and operator, has completed their purchase of Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono, Me. With its acquisition of the course, the company plans to reverse membership losses, correct the club's finances and restore a Donald Ross routing that has sat virtually untouched since the famous Scot finished his work here in 1923.
The transformation of Boothbay Country Club in Boothbay Harbor, Me., reached an effective culmination this week when the private club capped its membership rolls at 300. When Harris Golf purchased the property in 1994, Boothbay Country Club was a public, nine-hole course that, like many Maine golf facilities, just happened to sit in close proximity to an Old World summer-home and tourist destination. Harris Golf promptly renovated the old nine, added a new one, took the club semiprivate, developed 21 real estate lots, courted and hosted tournaments (like the 2005 Maine Amateur) before taking the club private last winter.
Neither ice nor snow nor frozen ground nor two decades of development stasis can blunt the ongoing development of Old Marsh Golf Club, now under construction along the Maine coast in Wells.
