The Golf Course Superintendents Association of Northern California (GCSANC), in cooperation with the University of California Cooperative Extension, will host its 2008 Institute on September 15-16 at the Course at Wente Vineyards in Livermore, Calif. The educational conference titled: "What's More Important Than Water?" will feature speakers from water districts, educational institutions and allied golf organizations. All will discuss the topic of water from historical, environmental and scientific perspectives.
The Crossings at Carlsbad marked its one-year anniversary August 11th. In its first year of operations, the municipal course, located approximately 30 minutes north of downtown San Diego, has served thousands of people and garnered national honors while meeting the city of Carlsbad's goal of acting as a community amenity for golfers and non-golfers.
Woodland's Village, the largest master-planned community on California's Central Coast, will be expanding its golf offerings with the Challenge at Monarch Dunes Golf Club. The par-3 layout, which contains 12 holes, will open for play August 29th to join its regulation-length predecessor, the Old Course at Monarch Dunes, which debuted in 2006.
A grand opening ceremony was held in late June to celebrate the completion of a bunker-remodel project at Belmont Country Club in Fresno, Calif. Overseen by golf architect Neal Meagher, the work involved extensive upgrades to the course, the second of 16 designed by Bert Stamps and opened in 1956.
Officials with Dinuba, Calif., announced that the city's new municipal course, Ridge Creek Dinuba Golf Club, will open July 13. Designed by John Fought, the layout is located 30 miles south of Fresno.

Smylie Kaufman of Birmingham, Ala., and Kelsey Conway of Ventura, Calif., received the 2008 Presidents' Youth Leadership Award Thursday at the Rolex Tournament of Champions at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind. The award was created to recognize one boy and one girl American Junior Golf Association member who demonstrate leadership, character and community service through their involvement with the USGA-AJGA Youth Leadership Club - a joint initiative founded in 2006 to further develop junior golfers through volunteerism.

National Football League Hall-of-Famer John Elway has received the "Brodie Award." The award is given in recognition of an individual's accomplishments in both a chosen profession and in the sport of golf. The Brodie honoree is selected by a panel of tournament officials and is awarded at the event, held this year July 11-13.
