Wie to Play in another PGA Tour Event |
|
Michelle Wie has accepted an invitation to play in next week's Reno-Tahoe Open in Nevada. This will mark the eighth time the teenager will compete on the PGA Tour and the first since the 2007 Sony Open.
Wie, now 18, never cashed in during her previous PGA Tour appearances as she's never made a cut. The only time she has made money playing against men was on the Korean Tour in 2006 at the SK Telcom Open.
Wie, now enrolled at Stanford, has no status on any tour and has only one sponsor's exemption left on the LPGA Tour this year. She needs to win approximately $80,000 in her final tournament - a top-three finish at least, during the CN Canadian Women's Open in August to secure an LPGA Tour card for 2009. If that doesn't happen Wie could be headed to the first of two stages of qualifying.
Perhaps Wie's best chance to secure her LPGA card came last week during the State Farm Classic in Illinois. She was a shot off the lead going into the final round when LPGA officials learned she had left the scoring tent without signing her scorecard following the second round on Friday. Wie finished her third round and, afterward, was informed by officials she'd been disqualified because of the scorecard problem.
The Reno-Tahoe Open starts July 31. It may be one of the year's weakest events as it's held at the same time as the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
